I hope you know who did this....anyway the master Joseph Muller-Brockmann's beethoven poster. Poorly reproduced with Helvetica and help from wikipedia

Graphic Design Referenced

underconsideration are bringing out a book called Graphic Design Referenced looks like a book that I need, I hate when people drop names and say "I hope you know who that is" or think you should know as design students and designers. So this should be handy.

Have to wait till spring (northern hemisphere) 2009

Empire Type Quiz

Empire magazine has a quiz which shows bits of logotype cut out from film posters. I only got 20 or so.

Semi-Permanent 08

First off absolutely amazing event, the speakers, all the staff, Phil (Special features guy C4) the MC, the Church did awesome. Actually phil wasn't so great. But props to Simon (who we saw more of than we needed to) of the Church for overall amazingness for putting together the event.

Started off with a big bang Marian Bantjes (Ban-chees), showed her work and talked about her life and how she got where to she was in her life. I was blown away by her type patterns ridiculous stuff (also, probably not the right time to mention, but looking at my own page pictures make this blog almost irrelevant and boring). The kerning maybe off because of the pattern, but that stuff makes me want to start drawing up some patterns. Also the use of 'none type' as type (Sagmeisterness) gives me heaps of ideas. Super inspiring, lady who works for a small design firm in Newton with only 3 designer, who's name escapes me tells me that Bantjes talk was worth ticket price alone.

(All what I type is a retrospective look 'cos Semi-Permanent was on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th.)

Australian designer David Pidgeon (Pidgeon Design) was next up and had a tough act to follow up on. His work was all of top quality and his Di Stasio corporate identity extension was a highlight. But the work led to him to do an international competition for designs for the Australian pavilion at Giardini Della Biennale in Venice. Thinking outside the square and also doing things that are indirectly design related for design projects.

Byroglyphics

Russ Mills a does these ridiculous illustrations/designs, that make me want to just start to paint and craw and redo my projects that I did for drawing. Byroglyphics has so amazing stuff

Under Consideration

Underconsideration

They put it best: A growing network and enterprise dedicated to the progress of the graphic design profession and its practitioners, students and enthusiasts. At times intangible, its purpose is to question, push, analyze and agitate graphic design and those involved in the profession.

One of the sites they have launched (well it still is on their site) but Brand New has got some really inspiring stuff. People say they like looking through Logolounge, Dos Logos, Logology etc. for inspiration, but I think this is better seeing before and after shots.

Incidentally logo lounge has it's trends of 08 has some nice stuff there.

Underconsideration also has "the design encyclopedia" so if your Amazon.com recommended lists and other peoples list just aint cutting it check that out for books. Plus lots of other bits too

New Masters of Poster Design

Looking for poster designers, I found a killer in book "New Masters of Poster Design - Poster Design for the next Century" by John Foster (Fuszion Collaborative). All the stuff pretty good.
Here are a few:
Aesthetic Apparatus
Henderson Bromstead Art Co
this site is pretty crap though, hard to navigate, type fro menu's aint great.
Little Friends of Printmaking
Patent Pending Design

All have real nice print approach, silk look is so much better than some of the stuff bring made digitally. Lots of photoshop "pros" out there pumping out stuff.

The Beginning

Inspired by how easy it is to do a blog and with the thought of saving paper (printing money, ink, toner...) an online blog with images means colour and more links
